In old Norse mythology Odin rode Sleipnir, a magnificent 8-legged stallion, is described as the best and fastest of all horses, with the marks of hell written upon it. In this fabulous Icelandic hoodie you can find Sleipnir cantering with its numerous legs and flying tail. Below the horse, in the sleeves and in the hood are ornaments reminiscent of times past.

Sleipnir is quick to knit. As with many Icelandic sweaters, the sleeves are knitted first, followed by the body, and the yoke comes last, combining everything into a completed garment. The fit is with no-ease, and also the hood is shaped to be a bit like a head-hugging cap.

There are two different versions of the pattern, the easier is with no more than 3 colours at the same time, and the more challenging one has up to 5 colours in some rounds. Choose the one that suits you best! The hoodie in the picture is knitted with the more challenging version of the pattern.

The wool of Icelandic sheep has adapted to the harsh conditions of the northern island country and is characterised by its ability to withstand wind and moisture. In Iceland, garments made of this wool are used both indoors and outdoors, depending on their thickness. Wearing the Sleipnir hoodie, you can go out in temperatures below zero or in a drizzle, especially once you have made the fabric ”bloom” with finishing touches and wear.

The best Finnish alternative to Icelandic wool is perhaps the wool of Åland sheep. If the wool’s properties in outdoor activities are not essential to your dress, you can replace the wool of Icelandic sheep with any local alternative you like. Always ensure your gauge matches the pattern by knitting a swatch.
