Magical nature, glaciers and hot springs are probably what first come to mind when you think of Iceland. As well as fjord landscapes, volcanoes and waterfalls. And maybe also Icelandic horses and grazing sheep? All this
inspired Johanna to design this beautiful and practical dress with lovely twinkling jewels adorning the hem and yoke. Hence the name – gimsteinn is Icelandic for jewel.

The dress can be worn with leggings, for example. In the tender cold of early spring, it will keep you warm on the ski trail, but you can just as well wear it when enjoying a warm cuppa by the fireside with a friend. It is an
unbeatable garment for anything! Gimsteinn is quick to knit. As with many Icelandic sweaters, the sleeves are knitted first, followed by the body, and the yoke comes last, combining everything into a completed garment. You have a choice of two hem widths, and the shape of the body can be adapted by adding or leaving out some waist decreases and decorative cables. The front and back of the dress itself are the same, so it can be worn either way.

You will have no trouble knitting it with this pattern!

The wool of Icelandic sheep has adapted to the harsh conditions of the northern island country and is characterised by its ability to withstand wind and moisture. In Iceland, garments made of this wool are used both indoors and outdoors, depending on their thickness.
Wearing the Gimsteinn dress, you can go out in temperatures below zero just as well as in a drizzle, especially once you have made the fabric fluff up with finishing touches and wear.

The best Finnish alternative to Icelandic wool is perhaps the wool of Åland sheep. If the wool’s properties in outdoor activities are not essential to your dress, you can replace the wool of Icelandic sheep with any local alternative you like. Always ensure your gauge matches the pattern by knitting a swatch.
